Rumours vs. facts

What you may have heard

“There aren't many college options for girls.”

There are 200 colleges with women's wrestling on our map today, at every level, and more are announced each year.

“The good programs are all Division I.”

Only 7 Division I colleges have women's wrestling. At the first NCAA championships, McKendree, a Division II program, won the team title, and three of the top five teams (McKendree, North Central and Grand Valley State) were Division II or III.

“College women's wrestling is a club sport.”

It is a varsity NCAA championship sport since 2026, and the NAIA has crowned champions since 2023.

NCAA.com: women's wrestling becomes the 91st championship Avila Athletics: the first NAIA women's championships, March 2023

“College coaches look at her folkstyle record.”

Women's college wrestling is freestyle. Coaches want to see her in freestyle: Fargo, the women's national events and freestyle tournaments.

“There's no scholarship money for women's wrestling.”

Division II and NAIA programs can each fund the equivalent of 10 full scholarships for women, more than Division II allows men (9). Division III gives academic and need-based aid, not athletic.

“She'll be recruited the same way the boys are.”

The market is younger and less crowded: many programs are new, and coaches are actively looking for wrestlers. A girl who reaches out early, with freestyle results and video, stands out.

Scholarships and aid

Division I: Only a handful of colleges have women's teams, and what each can fund depends on whether it is in the House settlement. Ask each one directly.
Division II: Up to the equivalent of 10 full scholarships for women's wrestling, split across the team.
NAIA: Up to 10 for women's wrestling, separate from the men's 10 at a college with both.
Division III: No athletic scholarships: academic and need-based aid, the same as any student.
Junior college: Its own scholarship rules; often the lowest cost, and a path to a four-year program.

How recruiting is different for girls

Wrestle freestyle: college women's wrestling is freestyle, and that is the film coaches want.
Enter the women's national events: Fargo and the women's freestyle tournaments coaches attend.

Ask a new or young program

1 How long has the program existed, and how long has the coach been here?
2 How many scholarships (or how much aid) does it fund, and how many wrestlers are on the roster?
3 Where does the team practise, and who are the training partners?
4 Is the college committed long-term: budget, staff, facilities?
5 Where have its wrestlers placed, and how many stay all four years?

How women's wrestling got here

2004Women's freestyle wrestling is added to the Olympics, in Athens.
2019The NAIA holds its first women's wrestling invitational.
Campbellsville: the first NAIA women's invitational, 2019
2020The NCAA names women's wrestling an emerging sport. In North Carolina, Heaven Fitch of Uwharrie Charter becomes the first girl to win a state title, in the boys' bracket.
NCAA.com: women's wrestling becomes the 91st championship WBTV: the first girl to win a North Carolina state title, 2020

For girls, the doors are opening faster than anywhere else in college wrestling. Wrestle freestyle, look at every level, and reach out early.

Verify before you act

This library is general education for wrestling families. It is not legal, eligibility or compliance advice, and RecruitWrestlers is not a governing body and does not speak for one.

The rules are written, interpreted and changed by the NCAA, the NAIA, the NJCAA, the NCHSAA and each college, and they can change during the year. Every section names its source and this page shows when it was last checked (October 19, 2026). Where anything here differs from the governing body's current rule, the governing body's rule controls.

Before any decision that could affect eligibility, a scholarship or a signing - accepting prize money or an NIL deal, taking a visit, committing, signing - confirm the rule with the college's compliance office, your high school athletic director or the governing body itself. A wrestler's own situation can change how a rule applies.

RecruitWrestlers makes no guarantee that this information is complete or current and is not responsible for decisions made in reliance on it. If something looks out of date, tell us.
